Survivor Series

I am a survivor of rape. I was raped Oct. of 2009 and have long since been trying to heal. It’s a long long long process, so I decided to document it in the hopes of educating others and helping those who are going through the same thing to not feel alone.

APRIL IS SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH. IT IS NOT LIMITED TO APRIL NOR THE UNITED STATES. CREATING A CULTURE THAT SUPPORTS A SURVIVOR SHOULD HAPPEN EACH AND EVERY MONTH ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE.

Because of their constant fear of rape (conscious or not), women do things throughout the day to protect themselves. Whether it’s carrying our keys in our hands as we walk home, locking our car doors as soon as we get in, or not walking down certain streets, we take precautions … The fact that certain things women do are so ingrained into our daily routines is truly disturbing. It’s essentially like living in a prison — all the time.

I do these things, too. No one is safe.

It is one thing to want men to have equal rights, but it is another to say that somehow people being charged with rape is against their rights as a man. They think having sex by force is their right and it is wrong they cannot do that? These fuckers should do us ALL a favor and just not bother having sex with ANYONE. All of the so-called “facts” on that poster are just NOT TRUE.

I photographed this man yesterday. He was the first male I’ve ever gotten to photograph for this project; all the other men have been submissions. Men are slowly stepping forward for this. People are getting braver - showing their faces more, sharing more, and simply even participating. I received piles of emails a day. It’s been incredible to watch this project grow in the media, but that’s nothing in comparison to watching people grow from this project.

Hope

It’s been forever since I updated, I know :(  To make up for it though, I have a really good story to share!

Remember that post from several months ago about how people in my class were saying awful things about rape? Well, for another class this semester I have to work with one of the girls that were saying those terrible things. I was reluctant, but there isn’t much I could do about it and fortunately a close friend of mine is working with us, too. It took us a bit to decide on a topic, but finally we chose to do a project on “sexual assault of African-American women.”

A couple nights ago I was talking with this girl, I’ll call her Sara, about what rape culture and victim-blaming is. Sara went on to say, “Nobody deserves to get raped, but why would you go out when it’s dark dressed like that. Like, if I were to go out naked and get raped, what the hell was I doing going out naked.” Yea, I know, she used the phrase “nobody deserves to get raped, but.” So I asked her, why do people never ask about the rapist. Nevermind what the victim was doing or wearing, why the hell was the perpetrator raping her.

I was so surprised when she responded, “oh my gosh, you’re right! Nobody ever asks why the guy was raping her!” Of course, I reminded her that most sexual assaults are perpetrated by someone the victim knows and not so much by walking down the street at night, but it was great to see her revelation. Her view of rape and sexual assault totally shifted. It felt great to be able to actually successfully educate someone who was so set in her negative beliefs about something that is so important to me. This gives me hope.

Say What Now of the Day: In today’s edition of Santorum Santorum Says: Rape victims who get pregnant “have to make the best out of a bad situation.”

(Also: “I believe and I think the right approach is to accept this horribly created — in the sense of rape — but nevertheless a gift in a very broken way, the gift of human life, and accept what God has given to you.”)

how about I throw a chair at your gonads

let’s see you make the best out of a bad situation
